Mr. Maempel accordingly called at the Police
Station where he was interviewed by one of the Higher
officials who examined Mr. Kaempel's Passport and cross-
questioned him as to his movements. Mr. Maempel was asked
to state what firms he had interviewed during his stay in
Java and Singapore, information which Mr. Maempel natural-
ly refused to give. Apart from this, Mr. Maempel gave
the official all information for which he asked.
Having given information that he was leaving by
a certain ship for Europe Mr. Maempel was again seen by
the Police Officials with the object, apparently, of
ascertaining whether Er. Maempel was, in fact, sailing by
the ship which he had mentioned to them.
Er. Maempel being a British Subject, travelling
with a Passport issued by the Foreign Office, is naturally
much annoyed at the action of the officials in Singapore
in detaining him and insisting that he should give infor-
mation of his movements and actions. The Police made no
accusations against Er. Haempel, but it is evident that
they are acting on instructions from England.
We should be much obliged if you would cause
enquiries to be made into this matter and, if necessary,
issue such instructions as will obviate Mr. Maempel being
again subjected to this annoyance.
We are,
Sir,
Your obedient Servants,
(Signed) Ashurst, Morris, Crisp
and Company.
